2018 Audi A5 – Best Luxury Cars

Propelling the 2018 A5 2.0T from corner to corner is an updated 2.0-liter turbo-four, now producing 252 hp. In the S5,  the new single-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 makes a conservative 354 hp, Audi says. The A5 2.0T is lively and enjoyable— the S5 is quick but so composed the speed really sneaks up on you. The S5’s new turbocharged six has replaced the old supercharged six, which in turn had replaced a naturally aspirated V-8. As much as I liked both previous engines, this is the best yet. The amount of power Audi is producing could have been achieved using a 2.0-liter, but they never would have achieved the linearity and drivability you get with this engine.

From Motor Trend:

The new A5 and S5 are as much as 130 pounds lighter than the previous model and it’s immediately apparent on the road. Audi has risen to the usually difficult challenge of simultaneously improving both ride and handling. With every generation, Audi’s cars become less nose heavy, although the entire engine is still located forward of the front axle. This car, thanks in part to a torque-vectoring Sport Differential in back, turns in with authority and doesn’t suffer from the understeer associated with the previous car. It is worth pointing out that with the abilities of even the A5, performance limits were never really approached during our drive on public roads, but it was still possible to feel both the Sport Diff and Quattro all-wheel-drive systems working their combined magic.

Although the driving experience is solid and describes BEST luxury cars, what really distinguishes the new A5 and S5 from the competition is the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster. Getting behind the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit is like stepping into a car from a few years into the future. The configurable screen allows you to stare at conventional needles on faces large enough to fill the display or the driver can shrink them down, using the space for other information including a beautiful navigation map.

With a claimed top speed of 187 mph, Bentley boasts that the Bentayga is the fastest SUV in the world. The claim is made possible by a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12 that makes a mighty 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque; an eight-speed automatic drives all four wheels. The interior can be configured to seat four or five; only the finest leather will cosset those lucky posteriors. Diesel and hybrid powertrains will be offered in the future; the Bentayga goes on sale in early 2016.
From MotorTrend:
Tarted-up controls or not, from the driver’s seat, the whole experience is Audi Q7. That is a huge compliment to both the Q7 and the Bentayga. The Q7 is, after all, in the running for the Best SUV in the World—had it been present at last year’s SUV of the Year testing, it may well have knocked the winning Volvo XC90 aside. To wit, the Bentayga is wonderfully quiet inside. The view outside is expansive, and the driving position is perfect. Its ergonomics are first-rate, augmented by a spectacular Naim stereo system, a clear head-up display, and clear analog gauges that feel far more special than the Q7’s all-digital setup. The crisp screen between the speedometer and tachometer provides multiple displays, including the nerdtastic infrared night vision cameras.

From Car and Driver:
With its (relatively) low mass for a Bentley, the Bentayga is kind of spectacular to drive. The damping of the multilink front and rear suspensions is exemplary. Even over the extreme speed bumps peppered throughout the hamlets of southern Spain, the most massive of wheel displacements are forgotten in a single, gentle compression and rebound of the suspension. The electric power steering is weighty and direct, although it doesn’t enjoy a ton of feel. But by SUV standards, it’s excellent. As are the brakes. The pedal is firm and progressive, and even barreling down the twisting switchbacks of the Sierra Blanca mountains, there was never a hint of fade.
